For those of you not already aware, MCM Comic Con is an event held around the country and is the UK's biggest modern pop culture event. The London convention is held yearly at The Excel, at Royal Victoria, and has always been something I'd always wanted to attend but I'd just never gotten around to. Jam packed with props from hit TV shows and movies, exhibitor and merchandise stalls and exclusives from the gaming and film world, it really is something that needs to be seen to be believed. Having had a chat with a few longterm attendees of the event, it seems that people often come from far and wide to visit for the day or weekend - often dressed up in elaborate costumes and cosplay.
Having arrived early that morning, I was pretty overwhelmed by the sheer size of it all as I made my way in to the main building. I was also pretty pleased to beat the queues and have free reign of the event although this would soon change as the day went on and by Saturday, it was completely sold out. Featuring literally hundreds of stalls and exhibits, it was so much fun to look around and have a look at all the weird and wonderful bits of memorabilia and merchandise. I couldn't get over some of the amazing outfits though, I lost count of how many Rick and Mortys there were although this one was certainly my favourite of the day (pictured above).
Since I was attending the event with work, Jack unfortunately wasn't able to come too but I set out to find him a present and stumbled across these amazing red velvet cupcakes from Amazing Cake Co. (pictured above). The detailing on each hand-painted cake was incredible and, naturally, I had to take some home. Just look at the 3D hat on Ash and the makeup on Princess Peach! I bet the queue for these guys on Saturday was unreal but totally worth it. Most impressive was that I managed to get them home in one piece.
One thing which really struck me from the event (besides the incredible efforts people go to when creating their costumes) was the atmosphere. Everyone is so friendly and chatty; there is certainly no air of judgement. It was really lovely to be in a place with so many like-minded, creative people. One other thing I will say, however, is that the food inside the event itself is all junk food and sweets - hence my hotdog. So if you're wanting something more healthy, you may wish to eat outside or bring something in with you (if that's allowed).
Well, that's it for another film event. Have you ever been to Comic Con before? What are your experiences of it? As always, I love reading your comments so please do leave me lots of lovely ones down below. Personally, I'm convinced that I'll be returning again soon and looking in to similar events in London for sure. I'd really love to go back with Jack as I'm sure he would have loved all the gameplay and VR stuff. I had an awesome time and was so pleased to meet so many cool new people. Huge thanks to Warner Bros. and DC for the ticket and passes.
Until next time,
Ahh i'd love to go to comic con next year in London! I usually go to another con for comic book tv shows but had to miss this year! It happens the same weekend now in London, so i will be booking for next year! The pokemon stuff will be bought and DC styff browsed for sure! :)

It's so much fun! Maybe I'll see you there ;) Haha omg there's SO much Pokemon stuff, it really dominated the stalls around the place x
DeleteThose cupcakes look great! I'm planning to watch Wonder Woman this weekend so I'm glad that it's gotten good reviews. I've been disappointed with some of the recent DC superhero movies.
ReplyDeleteThey were delicious too! Much better than a standard birthday cake :) Ah excellent, can't wait to hear what you think of it. I personally really enjoyed it - finally a strong DC movie not directed by Christopher Nolan and by a female director!
DeleteWow Sophie this is amazing! I've always wanted to go to the Comic Con in San Diego and this has made me want to go even more. The costumes are fantastic. Did you dress up too? Thanks for sharing your photos XD
ReplyDeleteAh I'd LOVE to go to the one in San Diego, its just crazy and they have so many amazing actors and celebrities. I didn't dress up myself sadly as I went with work but I did get a Wonder Woman tiara and I may have worn it around the house haha. Thanks for reading hun xx
DeleteI saw lots of people in London dressed up recently in various colourful fun great! Looks like you had a great time.
ReplyDeleteKeen to see Wonder Woman, especially as I know the lady who did her makeup :)

Yeah it's so fun! I actually didn't know the way to the Excel so I followed the costumed people haha. Oh amazing that's so cool - I'm guessing she's naturally stunning though? Hope you enjoy the film, it's awesome xx
DeleteIt's fun....been several times a few years ago (it was previously a lot smaller and not at the Excel but it kept getting busier each year and the crowds put me off). A few people I know are into the cosplay and really good at it. http://www.jenikya.com/blog
ReplyDeleteOh cool! I'd love to go again properly and maybe even dress up. Some of the costumes were amazingly impressive! Yeah it was massive - I think if I went again it would have to be on the Friday because the Saturday would have been unbearable haha x
DeleteThis is a great post :) I loved looking through your photos of London Comic Con; it's made me even more excited for Manchester's Comic Con at the end of the month! It will be my third year attending and I absolutely love it! As you say, there is just such a friendly atmosphere at Comic Con events that really help relieve my anxiety of being around so many people. Those cupcakes look incredible too! x

Ah thank you hun! Yeah totally, it's rare for me to feel completely at ease or not out of place by Comic Con has such a great atmosphere with no judgement at all. I loved it :) Hope you enjoy Manchester! xx
DeleteMCM is great and I go to their Birmingham show twice a year, it was my first larger convention back in 2009!
ReplyDeleteFor London cons I prefer London Film and Comic Con (by Showmasters), which I've also been going to since 2009. I think it's bigger than the MCM shows and they usually get bigger guests and a wider range. MCM seems to cater more for collectors and anime fans in my experience. I'm glad you had a great time. :-)
Aw that's amazing. I'm so jealous, I'd love to go again next year. I saw your photos and you got to meet so many amazing people! I think I'll definitely have to go to LFC next year by the sounds of it. I love the comic aspects but I'm so much more interested in the film side of it xx
