Beauty Review: DGJ Organics Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner

Hello, hello! Happy Friday! I'm back with another beauty review (I seem to be doing a lot more of these lately!) and today I'm reviewing DGJ Organic Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner*. Having used the same shampoo brand for years, I thought why not try something new?

DGJ (Daniel Galvin Jnr.) Organics were first developed 10 years ago, boasting to be the original organic haircare brand. They promise to be made entirely with plant derived natural ingredients, enhanced with Organic essential oils/extracts and contain no harsh chemicals.

DGJ Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner* contains caffeine and organic lavender oils, designed to aid hair growth and add thickness to thinning, dull hair. Now, having very thick hair myself, it's not necessarily what I needed but it's always nice to have a little boost! Having Body Shop in the past, I was always told about the dangers of using shampoos containing chemicals but having coloured hair, I've always been a bit of a skeptic and used them anyway! So this is my first experience of using organic haircare...

At first glance, I'm not so keen on the packaging but they do have that premium salon-style to them.  Being free from parabens, chemicals and sodium, it does mean that the shampoo doesn't get the usual foam that your standard brands would and so you need to massage it in to your palm a bit first (massaging straight in to your scalp can make your roots more greasy).

Having built up a foam in my hands and applied it to my hair, I immediately smelt the lavender though, thankfully, it's not too over-powering. Both the shampoo and conditioner contain caffeine, which stimulates the hair follicles, and these washed out nicely though it did take a lot of my hair colour with it. After rinsed and blow-dried my hair and I could notice a definite shine and the remaining subtle smell of lavender. I've never been a big fan of the lavender smell but I would definitely recommend using this before bed as it's actually super calming! (They also have other ranges not featuring lavender)

Though it didn't appear to strip any of my colour, it might be one to watch if you do dye your hair but otherwise both products left my hair feeling fresh and shiny. I have found that it does make my hair more oily but this is due to the lavender oils that create the shine so swings-and-roundabouts! Having tried these, I'd love to try their range for coloured hair.
I haven't used it for long enough just yet but I have certainly noticed a bit more a bounce to my hair and if you're looking for a organic, chemical free solution to thicker hair then this is probably the perfect one for you! Thanks for DGJ Organics for letting me try these out.

Have you tried DGJ Organics products before? Would you try them out? I'm so glad it's finally the weekend - is it me or has this week been a real struggle? What are your plans for the weekend? As always, I love hearing your comments below so let me know what you're getting up to!

Peace and love,

  1. I have such a love/hate relationship with paraben and sulphate free shampoos and conditioners. I can never quite get over the lack of foaming action.

    1. Yeah me too - it does take a lot of foaming up in your hands but seems like nice stuff. Personally I've never had an issue with using normal shampoo that isn't organic x

  5. I didn't realize why they put caffeine in the shampoo until I googled it. I remember someone telling me some years ago that it looked like I was going to keep my hair. That turned out to be the case, haha. My hair is kind of thick and curly; I always have trouble with bed head in the morning. I notice this brand can be obtained through Amazon. They have a kids line (banana and watermelon fragrance) and another line called "Hangover Hair".

My weekend might be shot. I was really sick last night and I took off work today so I've been mostly staying in bed. Hopefully it'll pass quickly. Maybe I can go to the beach on Sunday. I hope you're completely over what was ailing you, Sophie. I'm also glad you were able to get your refund from StyleMoi. And congratulations on becoming an aunt again in the not-so-distant future! x

    1. Thank you - yeah I think they sell it in Waitrose here too. I just got sent it for review. I don't think I'd use it much now though, it strips my colour and it's made my hair more oily and I don't like the lavender smell. Body Shop do nice shampoos.

Hope you feel better soon, get plenty of rest over the weekend :)

  7. I always love a shampoo that promises to thicken hair up a little and is organic at the same time. I actually quite like lavender as it's very calming and reminds me a little of my late nana. Great review sweet! <3
