In the 1950s and 60s, Roadshows were a grand cinema exhibition. Complete with a musical interlude, intermission and souvenir programme, movie goers could dress up for an evening of film, projected on a large scale screen as if they were attending a Broadway show. Embracing this tradition, Jack and I rocked up to Leicester Square's ODEON to bask in Tarantino's latest masterpiece, The Hateful Eight (2015) - projected in glorious 70mm Ultra Panavision.
Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the Roadshow started in the US on Christmas Day, breaking six state box office records and travelling all over the country before finally reaching the UK for it's opening night. Shot in 65mm but projected in 70mm, the film is only the 11th film to projected in Ultra Panavision - the largest format you can get and twice the size of your average cinema screen. Pretty impressive right? The film nerd in me has been well and truly awakened.

As promised, there was a musical interlude and Jack and I were each given a special edition programme as part of our ticket. The 10 page booklet includes some exclusive on-set images, a little look the cast, the history of 70mm and Ultra Panavision.
I've always loved Tarantino. Not only for his incredible filmmaking but for his passion of film as a whole. As demonstrated with Grindhouse (2007), a double feature production, he's a huge lover of nostalgia and the experience of film. I love that ODEON are one of the few cinemas out there finding more ways to regain this and I really hope to attend more events like this soon. All this, combined with the amazing atmosphere of one of London's most beautiful screens, made for breathtaking film viewing. Jack and I finished up the evening with a short stroll round London before heading home. I always liked to drop by The Princes Charles Cinema and check out their signs...
Well, that's another fantastic (no doubt soon-to-be Oscar nominated) film ticked off my list already this year. Will you be seeing The Hateful Eight? What would be your ultimate cinema experience? As always, I love reading your comments so please do leave me lots of lovely ones below. Don't forget, if you already follow me on the platforms on the competition, you can still enter!
I'll be following with a review of The Hateful Eight shortly but until then,
Such a cool looking experience! Great that there's a take away souvenir programme too, to remember it by! Wish we had something like that up here! :)

DeleteI really want to see it! But I don't think it's being shown anywhere near me, which is a shame. Love Tarantino's work. Death Proof is definitely one of my favourites.
ReplyDeleteMeg | A Little Twist Of…
Oh really? that's such a shame - do you have an Odeon near you? Death Proof is such a classic, very hit and miss for some people but a great example of Tarantino x
DeleteIt looks like you had a amazing time, how cool are those seats!! I will have to go and see this for sure! I saw Star Wars the other night, loved it! Brilliant film.
