Foodie Review: Wahaca, Wimbledon

Hello, hello. Back again with another foodie review and today I'm sharing something a little out of my usual comfort zone. Wanting to try something a little different from our usual burger bar outtings, Jack and I thought we'd head to Wahaca in Wimbledon to sample some Mexican street food. 

Located across London and opened by MasterChief winner Thomasina Mier, Wahaca is a Mexican chain diner which serves a variety of small plates of market-style food and cocktails. Specialising in Tacos, tostadas, taquitos and quesadillas, it boasts to be the ultimate in authentic Mexican market treats. Given my usual dish of choice seems to consist only of rare meat and a side of carbs, I decided it was time to mix it up a little and try something new and visit their Wimbledon branch, located just next door to the Odeon Wimbledon cinema. 

The decor itself is fun, modern and vibrant which makes for a great setting. I was really excited to get sat down and see what they had to offer. First up, Jack and I ordered some drinks. The drink's menu of cocktails, mocktails and fresh juices is pretty extensive and it was difficult to choose just which to go for. I opted for a Virgin Mojito which was both delicious and refreshing, whilst Jack went for a Green and Lean - a juice made from apples, cucumber, mint & lime. Next up was some grub. Taking a look a menu, we decided that the best way to make the most of our visit was to sample lots of little smaller dishes and try a bit of everything. The menu recommends 2-3 per person or to be shared for grazing.

We ordered quite a lot of food. It all arrived pretty promptly and all at once which was a bonus also. I opted for the Grilled British Steak tacos (pictured above) - three small tacos with flash grilled skirt steak with chipotle salsa. Although it doesn't state this on the menu, the tacos come with a guacamole, spring onions and the option of cheese on top. I also ordered some spicy slaw and some Chicken Wings. Unfortunately for me, the chicken wings were very pink on arrival and (rather embarrassed), Jack had to send them back for me. Luckily, the staff were super friendly and were happy to swap them for a replacement dish. Further to this, I kind of felt like these dishes were easily something I could make at home and probably enjoy more if I had cooked them myself. 

Jack went for a number of plates including the Chorizo and Potato quesadilla and the Pork Pibil (pictured above) - a slow cooked pork in a Yucatecan marinade with fiery pink pickled onions. Again, unfortunately these contained ingredients that weren't stated on the menu and, containing some black beans, this sort of ruined the taste for Jack. Whilst we could eat around them, it wasn't quite as we had hoped and Jack's dishes were seemingly a little on the bland side.

Overall, Wahaca proved to be a bit of a let down for us. I'm not sure whether it was just because  we like our food a little more simple or maybe Mexican food isn't the best choice for us given we don't like beans and certain other vegetables but it just felt a little mediocre as a whole. A lot of the ingredients in the dishes weren't stated on the menu which meant for a few unhappy surprises when they arrived. Whilst the place is reasonably priced at roughly £15 per head and the staff are very friendly, I don't think we'll be returning. I think it's safe to say that we'll stick to what we know best - steak and burger houses. Of course, it's always a good idea to try things for yourself. My Grilled Steak Tacos were enjoyable and if you like spicy, Mexican foods served up in a street style then there's a good chance this is probably right up your alley. I think my favourite thing about Wahaca was the decor.
