If you don't know how a tattoo works, the process itself is a mechanised needle (not a gun) which punctures the skin and injects ink into the second layer of skin. This process involves damaging the skin, resulting in a response from the body's white blood cells which then attempt to absorb the ink, leaving a permanent mark on the outer layer.
This one always baffles me as I'm not quite sure why it matters and the price can vary depending on your location. More annoyingly, this question is often followed up with "where can I get one cheap?" or "I want to get one but don't want to pay much for it". What? Why would you want a cheap tattoo? In my personal experience, you get what you pay for in the tattoo world and you want to go to the best artist you can find within your means of travel. It is going to be on you forever so try not to cut corners for the sake of saving a few extra quid. If you're serious enough about getting one, it's worth saving up to do so.
What happens to all of us? I don't understand why this is such a common question but it honestly seems to baffle people that I'll be an old person with tattoos. Luckily, I won't be the only one. Not much I can do about it nor does it bother me but who says I have to be a frumpy old lady?

This seems to be a question that most people jump to when asking me about my tattoos and I've never understood it. We all have ones we don't necessarily like as much anymore and when you got tattooed as young as I did, you're bound to want a few covered. But regrets? If I'm honest, not really. At the time I clearly wanted it and I did it so besides getting it lasered (no thank you) or attempting some cover ups, there's not much point in regret is there? Truth to told, when you've had them as long as me, they really do just blend in to your skin. Like a freckle or a scar, you tend not to even notice them on your skin after a while.
OK so this might not seem like such an annoying one but when you get asked it a lot, it can wear a little thin. There's this stigma sometimes that tattoos have to be meaningful and that kind of just annoys me because the majority of mine don't mean a thing. Every time someone asks me this question, I have to awkwardly explain how mine are simply pretty pictures and how I'm not bothered about them being a symbol for anything. Whilst the odd one could probably have a story behind it if you're clasping at straws, I'm quite happy not getting all deep and meaningful for the sake of it. This falls in the same category as when people ask me who my gypsy ladies are - sorry to disappoint again but they're just gypsy ladies.
Some honourable tattoo annoyances...
1. That guy wearing clingfilm on his arm in a club is just crying out for attention. You only need to keep your tattooed covered for up to a few hours after you get it done. Leaving it on all night can cause it to weep and not allow it to breathe and heal. I understand sleeping in clingfilm to protect your bedding but at a club? It doesn't stop people knocking in to it.
2. Please don't call yourself "inked" or say things like "nice ink".
3. Those girls who hashtag #girlswithtattoos because of that tiny, microscopic heart or star on their ankle or ribs. You're not a tattooed girl, you have a tattoo.
Until next time guys and girls,
I'm not even heavily tattooed but can super relate to this. Another one is when guys say "that girl's tattoos are well hot mate" loud enough so you can hear but not directly to you. Or when people ask you about your tattoos so they can talk to you about their tribal or rosary piece. Bonus point: when people say "why get tattoos if you don't like people talking to you about them?". Hopefully, now that everyone ever has tattoos, this kind of thing will die down! X

Ugh only that's the worst! It's like they assume you got them for everyone else? Or just cos you have tattoos that you're up for it? One guy was like "nice tattoos, can I get you a drink?" And then I said I had a bf and he was like "ugh whatever your tattoos are shit anyway" haha ooookkk mate x
DeleteI love this so much. I get asked a lot of mine are real? And OMG people that refer to them as ink make me cringe so bad! X
ReplyDeleteHaha it's so cringe! I know how weird is that?! My boyfriend never understood how annoying it was until someone in tescos shouted "excuse me are your tattoos like real?" Haha it's just lack of common sense x
DeleteOMG yes to all of the above! I'm not heavily tattooed but I have a few on my arms and people are just so annoying about it. I hate when strangers ask what they mean because it's such a personal thing. I can't believe people think yours are fake?! (they're beautiful btw!)

Yeah I find it odd when strangers talk to me full stop, let alone about my skin. Worse still when they touch you without asking! Yeah they just don't think before they speak haha thanks hun xx
DeleteI just adore your tattoos! They are stunning! I can't believe people ask if they are real?! Haha some people are so thick!
ReplyDeleteI only have one on my back but I want more, loads more, just saving up! I always get asked "what about when your old" I say I will be a cooler nana than you haha!

Aw thanks babe! Yeah they're just stupid, some people ask me if they're tights or like one of those sleeves you buy. Whhyyy? Haha exactly, I want to be a glamour nanna ;) xx
Deletei dont have any tattoos and i personally dont think i would ever get them, because im a scaredy cat and cant really deal with pain :p I think yours are so pretty though and all of the above are so ridiculous! haha :)

Haha dw hun, if you ever do decide to get one - I think getting a piercing is far worse pain! If you can do that, you can definitely stand a tattoo. Thanks hun, I know, you'd be surprised by some of the idiotic questions x
DeleteI have to admit that I'm probably the person who asks about pain, I'm not sure what information I'm after maybe scoping out where it hurts less. But without doubt and before stopping myself I will ask this haha Sorry! I want one on my foot. I hate pain and needles. And I know it is one of the most painful places but hoping to get it in the next month or two! Yours are gorgeous btw! (And hopefully I'll learn to stop asking people this question haha ;P)

Yeah I mean sometimes it is a genuine question if you're tattooed yourself because different areas do hurt more than others but it will hurt no matter where you get them done. If you want somewhere where it hurts less, try a more meaty area and avoid direct bone but it'll hurt either way and it's really not that bad, its very do-able and after a while your adrenaline kicks in to help out. It's not an actual needle too if that helps, it's nothing like an injection so it's not as scary in that sense, I hate needles too. I think if you really want it, just go for it :) It's like an hour of pain vs having something beautiful on you for life but it's also a good idea to speak to them first - you can't stop half way through! Haha nah it's ok, it's just a jokey post ;) xx
DeleteI am guilty of #girlswithtattoos when I actually only have one on my thigh >.< It's a decent size though and I'm gonna get it all the way down my leg this summer. I've still been asked these questions too, despite not having more!
ReplyDeleteI love your tattoos, they're beautiful.

Haha don't worry hun, I'll let you off ;) I was gonna say, your's is pretty big so it definitely counts! Ooh what you going to get? I've got some booked for May too. Thanks so much hun xx
DeleteMy fave tattoo of yours is the one inspired by the poster for George Melies' A Trip to the Moon; it reminds me of the movie Hugo. I don't have any tattoos but if I were to get one, it would probably be a Mickey Mouse one.
ReplyDeleteAw thank you - I think that's one of my favourites too. Oh really, why Mickey? I have a Mickey Mouse myself haha just a little one on my leg
DeleteI had a discussion with someone who was thinking about getting a Hello Kitty tattoo and I said that a Mickey Mouse one might be good for me.
DeleteKaty Perry has a Hello Kitty on her finger that's quite cute. I'm all for novelty tattoos although mine are a little hidden haha I do love my Mickey. I showed it to Mickey at Disneyland and loved his reaction :)
DeleteThis is a great post, I am pretty heavily tattooed & I get asked all these all the freakin' time, like literally every single day, tempting to just hand them a pre typed up FAQ. I also get 'but like what are you gonna wear on your wedding day?' which is a weird one. I can't deal with creepy old men talking to me about them anymore, and a women once said to me 'oh your mother must be devastated', she was so rude & I was at work so couldn't really respond, but yes this shit drives me insane! x
ReplyDeleteHA I know, people don't realise what we endure, do they? Haha that's such a good idea - I'm totally stealing that. YES! I get the wedding day comment all the time and it's like....err I'm gonna look badass in a girly dress? My mum does hate mine but I don't get why people make comments like. Things like "you'd be so pretty if you didnt have tattoos" - its like, what do you want me to say to that? I'll scrub them off, shall I? Working in retail taught me that people are just stupid xx
