Film Event: The Marvels Cat Cafe and Special Screening

To celebrate the release of The Marvels* in UK cinemas, I was excited to be invited to a very special afternoon tea at Java Whiskers Cat Café in White City, followed up an advanced screening of the film at Cineworld Leicester Square. Here's a little look at what we got up to...

For those of you who may not know, The Marvels is the second big screen instalment for Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), but this time she's teaming up with Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeauhas (Teyonah Parris).

Having taken revenge on the tyrannical Kree and destroyed Supreme Intelligence, Captain Marvel has unintentionally left the impoverished inhabitants of the planet to deal with the consequences of her actions. Now blamed for inciting a long civil war on Hala by Kree warrior and revolutionary Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), Captain Marvel must recruit some new and familiar faces to help save the World.

I won't share any film spoilers, but you may be wondering how the cat cafe ties in with The Marvels, and I can assure you it makes perfect sense having seen the film. The film obviously sees the return of Carol's furry Flerken-friend, Goose (Flerkins of course share their appearance with domestic earth cats); and this time Goose has a few friends.

It was truly a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. I loved getting to spend time with the cats and kittens, and all of them are available for adoption should you fall deeply in love with them - which I did. The temptation to take them all home was very much there.

We got to spend a little while getting to know them all, each with their adorable The Marvels collars on, before taking a seat and enjoying a lavish selection of sweet and savoury Marvels themed treats. How cute are the Flerkin biscuits? Naturally, I loved the grey looking cat as it reminded me of my own cat, Ripley

Having filled up on our afternoon tea and had plenty of cuddles with the cats and kittens at the cat cafe, it was time to hop on the party bus and over to Cineworld Leicester Square for the UK Special Screening. Here I posed awkwardly on the carpet and we enjoyed some drinks, DJs and photo opps before taking our seats to enjoy the film.

I won't spoil any of the plot or how the latest instalment in the MCU will feed in to the future of the franchise, but I will say that we had a great time at the screening. The Marvels is a surprisingly short entry and at just a little over 100 minutes runtime, it crams in quite a lot. It's a positive reminder that the superhero genre needn't always be a full on, near four hour narrative. With plenty of Flerkins and some familiar faces, there are some genuinely fun, crowd-pleasing moments; and the end of credit sequences set up the start of good things to come for the MCU. Though not the most powerful, or groundbreaking of Marvel films, I don't think there's anything wrong with a fun, easy-viewing action that packs a punch.

A huge thanks to Marvel for allowing us to spend the day with the kitties and enjoy a very special afternoon tea and screening at one of my favourite London cinemas. You can see The Marvels for yourselves in UK cinemas from 10th November.

Until next time film fans - higher, further, faster baby!
